102,000 m2 of this built environment is located in the heart of Seoul - the epicenter, the walled city. The cartographic references of this area date back to the 18th Century, testifying to its authenticity as the origin of the city. 300 years later we are still able to trace its evolution embedded in the rich texture of the city fabric through sedimentation of layers of historical interventions such as waterways, city grid and urban infrastructure. A seemingly chaotic but highly organized organic network of roads and built forms that constitute what remains a strong identity of this location. This site is further strengthened in importance by being a cardinal node between the Royal shrine and the Namsan Mountain in the north-south axis and the river in the east-west axis.
